Three classes, decided by two physical questions: can it be driven? and can one person lift it? All three earn hire revenue; the weight reflects how much scheduling, servicing and tracking each one needs from the system.
Primary = 1 unit · Secondary = ½ unit · Handheld = ⅕ unit · Cross-hired = half its class.
1
Primary asset = 1 unitDrivable — it moves under its own power with an operator on board, seated or standing. Excavators, loaders, rollers, forklifts, telehandlers, trucks, mobile cranes, EWPs and scissor lifts, ride-on mowers.
½
Secondary asset = ½ unitNot drivable, and too heavy for one person to lift. Generators, lighting towers, compressors, trailers, buckets and hammers, site huts, walk-behind and remote-control plant, skid-mounted pumps.
⅕
Handheld asset = ⅕ unitOne person can lift it without mechanical aid. Drills, saws, breakers, blowers, laser levels, small pumps, hand tools.

Cross-hired asset = half its classGear you source from another supplier while it's on hire. Counted at half its class weight for the days it's on hire in the month — and free when your supplier is on StayOnHire.
Bulk stock is never counted per piece. Fence panels, scaffold, props and other items you manage as a quantity are one secondary record per lot or SKU — a 50-panel lot is ½ a unit, not 10.
Your rate per unit steps down at 51, 201 and 501 units. See the full rate card by band →
